Barber Visits: Ruffians – Care over Speedcuts
London is something of a capital when it comes to classic barbershops. Between mahogany-paneled institutions with over a hundred years of history and colourful pop-up salons, it’s easy to lose track – and even harder to establish yourself as a new brand. The team behind Ruffians has managed just that. Since opening their first shop in Edinburgh in 2012, four more locations have followed in London. Today, Ruffians is considered one of the most exciting brands in the British barbering scene.
So what sets Ruffians apart? It’s probably the combination of solid craftsmanship and the ambition to create more than just a place for a haircut – a space where people genuinely enjoy spending time. When you step into the Covent Garden location, you’re greeted warmly and offered a coffee right away. Clients and barbers chat like old friends.

“It’s a great shop with great people,” says Joey, one of the barbers on site. “We’re creative, close to the people, and we build real relationships – that’s what the job is about. At some point, you’re not talking to clients anymore, but to friends.”
This mindset shapes not only the atmosphere but also the work itself. Care over speedcuts, real conversations instead of small talk. Ruffians has received numerous awards, including GQ Barbershop of the Year. “I think it’s down to the atmosphere, the attention to detail and the consistency,” says Joey. “There’s not the usual staff turnover you see in the industry. People know each other – for real.”
And the focus on quality doesn’t end with the cut. The choice of products speaks volumes, too. For shaving, Ruffians relies on blades by MÜHLE. “I use them for shaving and beard work,” Joey says. “They’re excellent. Sharp, smooth on the skin – really great blades.”
Ruffians brings together barbering craft and coffee culture, high standards and approachability. A visit to the barbershop that feels like catching up with friends – and maybe that’s the real secret to their success.
