A Store That Stands the Test of Time – Taylor of Old Bond Street and the Art of Staying Power

There are few places left where people spend half their lives working. Taylor of Old Bond Street is one of them. Neil Stanton has stood at his barber’s chair for an incredible 48 years, Barry Klein has been here for over 25, and another colleague has clocked in 35 years of service. In an age where careers are often fleeting, this kind of commitment is rare. “Here, people know each other. Here, people stay,” says Stanton. “Many of our customers have been coming for decades too – for half an hour every few weeks, we know each other, we’re friends.”

Founded in 1854, the shop has long been an institution in London’s Jermyn Street. Once, the path to a classic shave led downstairs to the basement barbershop; today, Taylor of Old Bond Street is a flagship for traditional men’s grooming. “Men used to come in for a haircut every two weeks, and even more frequently for a shave,” Klein recalls. Times have changed, but the craft and the atmosphere have endured.

Jermyn Street has its own rhythm. It is lined with tailors, shoemakers, and specialists in men’s fashion. “The clientele used to be even more conservative—some men refused to have their hair cut by a female barber,” Klein recalls. That attitude has shifted, but the street remains a bastion of classic elegance.

Taylor of Old Bond Street sells shaving creams, aftershaves, and hair tonics—products more associated with heritage than fleeting trends. “We rarely remove anything from our range,” Klein says. “We refine, improve—but tradition remains.”

Online sales are growing, but the shop remains at the heart of the business. “Many customers don’t just come to buy something—they stop by for a chat. For a lot of them, our store is a regular stop whenever they visit London.”
